Welcome back, readers! Last week was a mess and I couldn’t post on the blog at all but I want to be consistent for the rest of the month. The Top Ten Tuesday topic for August 13th, 2019 is: Book Characters I’d Love to Be Besties With. I don’t feel strongly about this topic, so instead I decided to do a recommendations post today on short/thin books that can be finished in one sitting. I’m considering books with less than 300 pages for this. I feel like short books are great for when you’re looking to get out of slumps or taking part in readathons. I hope you find some good recommendations in this post!
1. Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children #1) by Seanan McGuire
Length: 173 pages
Genre: Fantasy
The first in a series of fantasy novellas, this is has masterful world-building with diverse characters and a muder mystery at its core.
2. Ghachar Ghochar by Vivek Shanbhag
Length: 118 pages
Genre: General fiction
In a very short time, this book about the trials and tribulations of a family that goes from rags to riches is sure to tug at the reader’s heartstrings.
3. Pashmina by Nidhi Chanani
Length: 176 pages
Genre: Magical realism
A graphic novel about the heart-warming story of an immigrant girl exploring her Indian roots.
4. The Weight of Our Sky by Hanna Alkaf
Length: 288 pages
Genre: Historical fiction
This is on the longer side but I still managed to finish this masterpiece that follows a Malay teen with OCD during the race riots in Kuala Lumpur of 1969 in one sitting.
5. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie
Length: 288 pages
Genre: Mystery
Considered by many as one of Christie’s best works, it is a typical countryside murder mystery with one of the best climaxes I’ve ever read.
Do you prefer short books or heavy tomes? Which is the best short book you’ve read? Let’s discuss in the comments section below.
I do love a good long book every once in a while, but flying through short ones just makes me feel so much more productive and motivated to read even more. A short book I particularly love is The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman.

Yeah, whenever I’m in a slump, a short book puts me right back on track too! 😊 That’s one of the Gaiman’s I haven’t read yet. I’ll check it out, thanks! 💖

Very eager to try The Weight Of Our Sky and Every Heart A Doorway. Didn’t know the second one was that short. Liking shorter books a lot more these days.

That’s awesome! I really hope you find this post helpful then. 😊 Those two are my personal favourites from the list (although I rated all 5 stars haha), so I hope you enjoy them! 💞

I am definitely a “the shorter, the better” person 😛 I am reluctant to read anything over 400 pages…(LotR excluded, lol). I’ve not read anything by Agatha Christie but maybe I would start with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd! I see someone above rec’d The Ocean at the End of the Lane – I’ll second that! It’s my favourite Gaiman novel.

Haha, well, for LotR you just gotta make an exception! 😅 Ooh, yes, it’s probably her best work, so I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. 😊 I’ll definitely check out The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Looks like a rainy day read and the weather has been that way here lately. Thanks, Jenna! 💖
