Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. How it works is that each Tuesday the host assigns a topic and then posts their top ten list that fits the topic. Every blogger can create their own top ten (or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list as well and link to the host’s. The topic for February 26th, 2019 is: Places Mentioned In Books That I’d Like to Visit.
1. The Lord of the Rings series by J. R. R. Tolkien
Based on: England
Anyone looking for world-building done on a mind-blowing scale should definitely pick this classic up.
2. Mistborn (The Alloy Era) series by Brandon Sanderson
Based on: Wild West
Books 4 onwards in the Mistborn series are considered part of the Alloy Era, which contains plenty of gunslinger action and vigilante justice set in a wondefully inventive world.
3. The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
Based on: Old Venice
This incredible heist-centric novel has a plot that keeps you guessing at every turn and the unique setting makes it even more magical.
4. The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty
Based on: Ancient Cairo
With complex political maneouverings aided by a richly imagined world of djinns, this book draws inspiration from Middle-Eatern and Indian cultures and is a must-read for every adult fantasy fan.
5. Beasts Made of Night by Tochi Onyebuchi
Based on: Nigeria
A promising YA fantasy based on Nigerian mythology, this is an #OwnVoices narrative full of court intrigue, romance and the troubles of growing up with a healthy dose of magic.
Does world-building in a fantasy world excite you? Do you love fantasy maps? Do you have any other books that you would like to add to this list? Let’s discuss in the comments section below.
Yes, all of these places would be quite interesting to visit.

I’ve found very less people in the bookish community who love this series. So happy to know it’s one of your favourites! ♥️ Thanks for the links, will check them out soon. 😊

I really enjoyed LOTRs and for sure the City of Brass. I love immersive worlds. I really read fantasy a lot for the unique worlds that are created. I would say Children of Blood and Bone is very immersive. It’s long and gritty, but the world is super well-written. If you’re interested in more speculative fiction I would say that The Fever King is a really interesting world, but it’s very much based on our own.
