Top Ten Tuesday: Short Story Anthologies on My TBR

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. How it works is that each Tuesday the host assigns a topic and then posts their top ten list that fits the topic. Every blogger can create their own top ten (or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list as well and link to the host’s. The topic for July 17th, 2018 is: Favorite Novellas/Short Stories. I haven’t read a lot of short stories or novellas, so I wanted to change the topic to suit my reading habits. Recently, I have been curious about short story anthologies as they are great to sample the writing of different authors to see if their other stories would be a good fit for me. If you’ve read my April-May wrap-up post, I had featured an anthology in the June Anticipated Releases section, which is what got me interested in these in the first place. I haven’t read any that I remember, so these are the ones on my TBR. I’ll talk about three of them that are on my priority list and give a quick mention of the others.

1. A Thousand Beginnings and Endings

This has so many amazing authors in it that I ordered a copy without any care for the price! It’s basically an #ownvoices anthology featuring retellings of Asian myths. As you might know by now, I’m a huge advocate for Asian-inspired and #ownvoices Asian stories, so this is right on top of my list. Also, the cover art for this is too gorgeous to behold!

2. The Radical Element

This is more on the historical side of things and focuses on the stories of women who were rebellious during their times but are hailed as revolutionaries now. I feel like it has a similar vibe to it as Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, so I’m definitely looking forward to reading this. I’ve been reading more feminist YA lately but they have been contemporary fiction, so I really want to branch out and read up about the past as well.

3. Meet Cute

Contemporary fiction anthologies are gaining steam recently and this got a decent amount of hype around the time it released. I’ve been reading a lot of heavy and emotional books lately, so I think this will provide the perfect break for me with all its fluffy stories. It does have good diverse representation with some stories being #ownvoices, which is always nice to have!

Meet Cute

This list by Book Riot has 4 more, which are also on my TBR but I’m not sure when I’ll get to them. They are all 2018 releases and they sound absolutely fabulous, so I hope you will be encouraged to add them to your TBRs as well!

Some backlist anthologies also on my radar are – Because You Love to Hate Me, A Tyranny of Petticoats and Welcome Home.

  1. I want to read A Thousand Beginnings and Endings so bad!! Like I’ve heard wonderful things, the cover art is amazing, and that lineup??? I mean c’mon! I just need to wait for the right timing/funds lol. Nice list. I had to ditch this topic cause I couldn’t think of 10 novellas *facepalm* so I did celebrity autobiographies. Feel free to check it out here: http://nerdnarrationblog.wordpress.com/2018/07/17/top-ten-tuesday-cat-edition-trust-me-its-not-what-youre-thinking/

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the books on the list. 😊 I’ve actually heard mixed things about Because You Love to Hate Me but I think it’s a book that will click with me specifically and your good review is definitely encouraging! I’m excited about Fresh Ink as well. It has an interesting line-up of authors, most of whom are on my radar, so I hope I can get to it soon.

    1. Thank you! 😊 I’ll surely have a review of A Thousand Beginnings and Endings soon as the book is on the way and I can’t wait to get started! The feminist anthologies with a historical twist sound great but I’m not really sure when I’ll finish them. I’ll try my best though! So glad you enjoyed this post and added some books to your TBR. 😊

  2. Meet Cute has been really hyped all over the book blogging community for a while, and it definitely sounds cute! However come to think of it I’ve never really read that many short story collections written by many authors, I prefer reading a collection of short stories written by one author. So thank you so much for all the recommendations! 🙂

    1. I’m very interested in Meet Cute as I’ve heard the stories are quite diverse and I’m currently on a diverse contemporaries kick, so I’m glad it’s getting good buzz. I’m not much of a short story collection person myself. Any recommendations? 🙂 I’m sorry (not sorry) that I’m adding to your TBR. 😅

      1. I recently really enjoyed The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, written by the same author and is a very fairy-tale ish, quite dark and magical collection. Don’t be sorry! It’s always nice to add more books to the TBR 😉

  3. I’m going to hang my head in shame for a moment. Because I like short stories and collections of such, but I rarely read them. :S But last year I read Ted Chiang’s Arrival (formerly titled Stories of Your Life and Others) and found it really interesting, and also Leigh Bardugo’s The Language of Thorns (which is a collection of fictional fairy tales and not really short stories, but it’s Leigh Bardugo so who cares, right? *lol*). I do need to start Ursula K. Le Guin’s short story and novella collections at some point, and just last week N.K. Jemisin announced that her publisher is putting out a collection of her short stories – and I absolutely plan on reading that as soon as it’s out. 🙂

    1. That’s fine, Sara! Sometimes we can get so caught up with all the new novels that we neglect other forms of literature. I’m surely guilty of that as well. 🙈
I really want to read The Language of Thorns but I first want to read Bardugo’s books in publication order. I’ll hopefully be done with them before King of Scars is out next year. 😅
I don’t read that many companion novellas or short story bind-ups of a series, especially if they are released after the series is complete. I think it’s mostly because I haven’t found a series that I like so much yet. I hope you get to read UKLG and Jemisin’s collections soon. 🙂

      1. That’s not a bad idea re: The Language of Thorns and the other Grisha novels. That way, you’ll be somewhat familiar with all of the Grishaverse nations when you get to the fairy tales. You’ll see what I mean when you read the Table of Contents. 😉
