Reader Confessions Tag

It seems like the people of the book blogosphere have been noticing my existence off-late. I have been tagged by the lovely Kate from The Backwards Bookshelf for this tag. I would strongly encourage you to check out her blog because she’s an amazing blogger from Philippines who reads and reviews a lot of diverse and #ownvoices books. This tag features a bunch of questions where I reveal shocking truths about my bookish life and then tag my friends so I can get them to confess too. Since I’m an impatient person every time someone mentions the word ‘secrets’ around me, I’m going to spare you the wait and get right to it!

Reader Confessions Tag

1. Have you ever damaged a book?

A. The most recent incident that comes to mind is when I was unboxing the Folio Society editions of The Lord of the Rings, which are the pride and joy of my collection, but accidentally slashed the spine of The Return of the King. I’m sure I’ve damaged plenty of others, but the important thing to keep in mind is that I would never do it on purpose.

2. Have you ever damaged a borrowed book?

A. I used to borrow a book from my school library every week when I was a student, so I’m pretty sure some manhandling has taken place over that time period. However, I’ve tried my best to undo as much of the damage as possible or simply hide it from the public eye if impossible. I don’t remember a specific incident but that behaviour sounds an awful lot like me.

3. How long does it take you to read a book?

A. I could finish one in around 3 days back when I was young and didn’t have to earn for a living. Now that I’ve graduated and joined the big bad world, my average has dropped to 1 week. I just have so many things to do that I haven’t been able to focus on reading as much as I’d like to.

4. Book that you haven’t finished?

A. I received a free copy of a book in exchange for a review around 3 years ago that I put down because I couldn’t get into it at all. I haven’t made any progress on that even now but what makes it even worse is that I have the sequel to it as well. I never communicated this to the author either, so I’ll just show myself into a cell in the bookish jail now.

5. Hyped/popular books you didn’t like?

A. I think half of my followers will disappear overnight on reading this, but I really disliked The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. The problem is that I really love some of the characters in them but the main characters make me want to stab them with their own angelic swords in their sleep, so I feel extremely conflicted whenever someone mentions Clare’s books. I don’t even know how I managed to read 9 of them and a companion book. I guess I kept hoping it would get better but it really didn’t improve in the slightest.

6. Is there a book you wouldn’t tell anyone you were reading?

A. I’ve definitely gotten better at choosing what kind books I read since I started college and I’ve never felt guilty about reading any of them. In fact, I use Goodreads to help me track my reading, so it’s all out in the open for everyone to see. However, as a thirteen-year-old, I was a huge fan of the Twilight series because I was too naïve back then to realise how problematic the series was. I’m sure a lot of people can relate to this and I’m glad I’m not alone but I still wish I hadn’t bought all of the books.

7. How many books do you own?

A. I think the fact that the number is so small is what would shock people more than anything else. I’ve become a hardback hoarder only since I’ve started working and owned very few books before then. All put together I believe the number would be around 50 books.

giphy4

8. Are you a fast or a slow reader?

A. I would love to call myself a fast reader but I’m quite aware there are lots of people who read faster than me, so I’d say I’m faster than average but not nearly as fast as non-readers imagine I am. I don’t actively try to read fast because I like to take time to assimilate whatever I read, savour it and remember it long after I’ve turned the last page.

9. Do you like to buddy read?

A. My first real attempt has been The Silmarillion with fellow Tolkien lover, Jenna. It’s still on-going although I think I’ve been a failure. The other one I tried recently was with Charvi for Second-hand Origin Stories, but she had to pull out due to schoolwork. I’m sure you sense a pattern here. I like to read at my own pace, so I’m not sure I’d make a good buddy, so I prefer to read solo. I’ve also planned buddy reads throughout the month, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they work out.

10. If you were only allowed to own one book, what would it be and why?

A. All of my favourites are series, so I really can’t choose! But since I have to in order to successfully complete this tag, I’ll go with The Martian by Andy Weir. I had to pick something from the SFF genre because it’s my absolute favourite and this was the best standalone I could think of. I don’t own the book at the moment, so make of it what you will.

Now the time has come to get the following people to spill the beans on their wrong-doings:

  1. Charvi from Not Just Fiction
  2. Aditi from Dreamy Reads
  3. Shruti from This is Lit
  4. Etinosa from Uwadis
  5. Aurora from Aurora Libralis

We did manage to discuss the book , so I’m quite happy about that… v should definitely do it again…
It was my first time ever buddy reading and I loved it 😊😊

      2. I thought we were reading Vicious together for Phase II, but looks like you skipped that? I think there’s one more book in Phase III that we could read together, only if you’re willing to wait for a slow coach like me. 😅

Sorry about Vicious… I could still read it along with you if u are planning it sometime soon… I only skipped it because the idea of phase 2 was putting me in a slump and making me anxious…
Reading 2 books in phase 3 has definitely made me feel better…
I think v were planning The Belles or Children of blood and bone… I’m ok with any of them, whenever u want to… even if it’s after this month 😊😊

      4. That’s fine, Sahitya. I might skip Vicious depending on the amount of time I have, so maybe we can pick it back up some other time. It was The Belles I think. I have it on audio but I’m not allowed to start a Phase III book before Phase II, so I might take a bit of time. 🙈

These answers were all so funny. It had me laughing for a solid five minutes after I read it all because that is so relatable. Have a great day 🙂

I have to read Martian ❤ 50 books is a great number! I don't own many books either. Most of them are digital and I prefer buying paperback copies of those that I love because I'm always scared of what to do in case I didn't like the book XD

    1. Let me know what you think after reading. Since it’s a hyped book, there are some who think it lives up to it and some who are underwhelmed, so I’m curious to know your opinion. 🙂 Also, that’s a very good reason to buy paperbacks. God forbid we start stacking books we don’t like and run out of space on our shelves. 😅

  3. Thanks for the tag. Love your use of gifs. I haven’t read any of Cassandra clare’s books. 50 books is so much to me… I think I have like 20. Can’t wait to buddy read the poppy war with you

    1. I’m replying really late to this, so sorry! Are you interested in the Shadowhunters world? I think you can try the first and see. Although I think I would’ve liked it more if I’d read it in my teenage rather than my adulthood but some of the characters in that series are my absolute favourite! ❤ I recently started purchasing books with my salary, so it went up from like 30 that I had as a kid to about 50 now. I still have so many favourites that I’m yet to purchase though. 😅 I try to have a cap on how much I spend on books, so hopefully I won’t run out of bookshelf space soon? 🙈

  4. i only buddy read once, with a friend of mine. we just randomly decided to read the same book
don’t think i could do it, cuz as you said i like to read at my own pace and what if i don’t like the book halfway through or something…

    1. Yeah, people who buddy read successfully are such mysteries to me! How do they even match the pace? What if I’m free and get to read a little extra? What if the book had a scene I needed to process and had to put it down? No two people can read a book the same way, so I have no clue how buddy reads even work. I’m glad we share this opinion though. 😊

  5. I don’t work right now, only studying, but I get what you mean with the big bad world. What is time? I’ve none.
Or I could read at night, but I end up being too much tired to actually do a thing. I totally feel not in the mood and ready only to stay in my bed while scrolling my tumblr (full of nerdy headcanons 😂) until I’m completely out. My brain doesn’t have the strenght to read at night. Or I just start to feel sleepy after few pages. I hate it.

    1. Right? 😭 I wish I had the privilege to just be paid to read books. I hope it’ll be possible some day though, if only I work hard enough. But how is that possible if I’m stuck in office all day? 😞 Adulting is such a curse sometimes!

  6. Ahhh yes I remember that buddy read 😅 I still haven’t gone back to that book and I don’t think I ever will…
And I had the same experience with the twilight series!!! I raced through them back in 7th or maybe 8th grade without thinking much. Actually younger me rarely gave any thoughts to what shit took down in the books, she just enjoyed them. But I’m really glad I didn’t buy them!
I have around 55 books 😊 Fun fact: I would have had much more but I remember loaning them to some kind of ashram for the kids to read but then one fine day the kids took off to somewhere and the books disappeared with them 😭 Some of my favourites were in there.

This is such an interesting tag! Not sure when I’ll get to it though 😝

    1. I feel like I’m always super late on finishing tags, so no problem at all! 😅 Oh no, that really sucks! Maybe you can hint at your parents and friends to buy them again for you? 😉 I mean, we’ve got to have our favourites close so we can pet them every once in a while right? Are we even bookworms if we don’t do that? 😅

      1. I need to start collecting my childhood favourites soon and maybe re-read them. I sometimes crave good children’s books but also only because there’s a nostalgic feeling attached to them and I’d probably never reach for any new releases. 😅

    1. There are so few of us who don’t like this series! I feel like almost 99% of YA readers are in love with it. Thank you for sharing your opinion! 😊 I’m glad you didn’t push through like me. It never really got any better.

  7. Nooo, I wouldn’t say you’ve been a failure as my Silm book buddy! I like to think we’re both taking that book ‘slow and steady’ haha. I will continue to send you bimonthly check ins until we both finish it 😉 (Unless of course you would rather I just stop pestering you, lol).

    1. Haha, obviously not! I just haven’t found the time to get back to it and even attempt to catch up with you. I’m such a bad buddy, lol. Absolutely spam my inbox with any and all thoughts as you read! 😊

  8. Does getting the occasional food or tea stains on the pages count? That’s probably the most “damage” I can remember inflicting on any of my own books, partly because sometimes I eat or drink tea while reading. But the way I see it, the stain is (usually) a sign of my love for the book. (*big angelic smile*)

And don’t feel bad about wishing you could read books faster. I wish I could, too, but I’ve learned to accept my “speed.” Plus, I try not to read for more than an hour at a time. Otherwise, my eyes start crossing. :S

How far have you gotten through The Silmarillion? What do you think of it so far?

  9. *makes sure Charvi isn’t here* ok tbh I started reading infernal devices last year and I really didn’t like it and after that I just don’t feel like reading mortal instruments. I wanna do a buddy read but fdhdjhe I can’t find the time to do it. I also want to read the Martian. Gahh there are so many books. How am I ever going to read all of them??!

Thanks for tagging me and sorrryyyyy for the late comment. I just opened my site. I am so lazy but I couldn’t find the time for blogging. 💗

    1. That’s fine, Aditi! I completely understand. 😅 School is more important. Besides, stans like me will always be there whenever you’re ready to start blogging again. ❤
I have a love/hate relationship with Clare’s books. The side characters seem to be so much more interesting than the main couple/messy love triangle. Just give me more Shadowhunting and less angst. 😭 Your secret is safe with me. 😉
