February & March Wrap-Up + April Reading Month (2018)

Since I was on a hiatus around the time this post was supposed to go up for the February wrap-up, I decided to combine both the months into a single post. Both February and March were decent reading months, although I was still reeling from the effects of the book slump I mentioned in January, and my reading time was cut down severely due to work stress. I didn’t do well blogging-wise either as I was absent for a few weeks without any notice. However, I did manage some decent progress, so let’s focus on that.

Feb-Mar Wrap-Up 2018

What I Read

I finished a total of 7 books in the months of February and March, which is much lesser than I had hoped to read. However, I’m still on track for my Goodreads goal, so I’m not too stressed about the numbers. I had already started with A Conjuring of Light by V. E. Schwab, the third book in her Shades of Magic series, at the end of January, but only managed to complete it by the end of February. It was my favourite book in the series and it was only due to time constraints that I didn’t consume the book faster. Overall, I really liked the entire series and can’t wait to read more from Schwab. Next I bought Lyra’s Oxford by Philip Pullman on an impulse and finished it in one sitting. It was such a nice experience to dive back into the world created by Pullman and this little collection of short stories made me more excited for the next book in The Book of Dust series.

In March I started and devoured one of my most anticipated February releases – American Panda by Gloria Chao. It was every bit as wonderful as I’d anticipated. I also listened to two audiobooks – one was a classic by Agatha Christie, And Then There Were None, and the other a business non-fiction, The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz. While I enjoyed both of them, and especially the narration of the former, they didn’t up on my favourites list. For the Crone Bloggers book club, I read The Fandom by Anna Day. It was quite a struggle to get into initially, but by the end I was won over and quite enjoyed the story. Finally, I finished March on a high note with a wonderful book called Owl Eyes, the debut novel by Molly Lazer. I got approved for the ARC on Net Galley and I was blown away by how good it was in every aspect!

Feb-Mar Read 2018

Highlights

  • 200 WordPress followers!
  • My first ARC approval of 2018 – Owl Eyes (review link)
  • First ever author interview on my blog (Q&A link)
  • My posts were featured on others’ wrap-ups and blogging highlights (Thanks to The Cursed Books and Avalinah’s Books)
  • My first bookish subscription box experience

Memorable Posts

I didn’t do a lot of blog hopping this month, I’ll admit (I’m sure my apologies won’t work anymore). Here are some of my favourites from the months of February and March –

Anticipated Releases

  • Dread Nation by Justina Ireland (April 3rd) – a dystopian novel which features zombie and tackles topics like race and privilege
  • Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody (April 10th) – has got all of the hype and has elements of an underground casino scene set in a fantasy world
  • Winter Glass (Spindle Fire #2) by Lexa Hillyer (April 10th) – I put it on this list solely because I follow this author on Twitter, think she’s an amazing person and wanted to support her (also, I don’t want to spoil anything by putting a synopsis here)
  • Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli (April 24th) – considered a sequel to the popular Simon vs Homo Sapiens Agenda, it focuses on Leah, who was a minor character in Simon, and has some amazing representation
  • Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young (April 24th) – a debut fantasy that has a badass Viking heroine who must come to terms with the fact that her brother, whom she long thought of as dead, fights alongside her tribe’s rival

April Releases 2018

Tentative TBR

I had made a summer TBR for myself in a Top Ten Tuesday post recently (check it out here), so I’ll be looking to cross off books from that list during April. I have already finished Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff and look forward to reading Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo and Everless by Sara Holland. I have two ARCs to be finished in April – To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo and Smoke Thieves by Sally Green (already on the TBR list). For The Cursed Book Club, I will be reading Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco and I’m very excited for it because I’ve heard mostly good things about this series. For the Crone Bloggers group book, I’m going to attempt to finish The Extinction Trials by S. M. Wilson before the 22nd of April.

Geez, i didn’t know that dread nation has zombies??? I’ve been seeing it all over the social media but i don’t actually read it. Good thing your posts are always welcoming. Thanks for this!

    1. It says on the blurb that there are schools that teach how to kill the dead, so I assumed that means zombies. Hopefully I’m not wrong here! 😅
Thanks for letting me know that you find these kinds of posts helpful! 😊 The support is always welcome. ❤

      1. I get what you mean. 😅 But I usually put books on my TBR only after carefully reading through the synopsis, which is why I like to summarise them for those who don’t have the patience for reading all of that. 🙂

  2. My first three monmth of the year were a mess. But looks like April will be good…? I just finished a book and I will try to start another, also finish, in few days.
I’m really curious for Winter Glass… if I’ve only read Spindle Fire, and Sky in the Deep. The only thing that put me off a bit about the latter is that I’m really into stories with protagonist that are so attached to certain community, not that is a bad thing, but that is probably not gonna let them see outside people as such. I might be wrong, but that’s the feel that the show Vikings gave to me 😂

  3. I’m definitely curious about your thoughts on Wonder Woman when you finish it. Most readers seemed to enjoy it, but I thought it was all right. It’s the only book by Leigh Bardugo so far that hasn’t blown me away.

Winter was kind of a weird reading season for me. I liked most of what I read, but I also DNFed a couple books and thought a few others were just OK. But my favorites… if I can remember them now (*lol*)… they were INTO THE BRIGHT UNKNOWN by Rae Carson, A WRINKLE IN TIME by Madeleine l’Engle, A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS by Marie Brennan, and.. and… My brain stopped working. XD

As for the rest of the spring, right now I’m reading my first Brandon Sanderson book, MISTBORN, and it’s SO good so far! I’m also planning to read a couple new books (THE ASTONISHING COLOR OF AFTER by Emily X.R. Pan, THE PRICE GUIDE TO THE OCCULT by Leslye Walton) and catch up on some older ones.

Also, you’re not the only one who’s had a crazy dose of life recently. I’ve fallen waaaayyyy behind on blog comments the past couple weeks, and I might take a couple weeks off from posting anything new just so I can make sure I make my next deadlines for Writers Helping Writers and DIY MFA. It’s been… well… yeah. :/

    1. Even I’ve heard nothing but good things about Wonder Woman. Hopefully I can read it without the hype getting to me! 😅 I’ll post a review as soon as I’m done. 🙂

I want to check out Rae Carson’s books soon. Glad to know you enjoyed the last book in the Goldseer trilogy. 🙂 I read A Wrinkle in Time last year and although I enjoyed it, I felt like I would’ve liked it better if I’d read it as a child.

Good to hear that you’re liking Mistborn. It is one of my favourite fantasy series! 😊 I also have The Astonishing Colour of After on my TBR. It’s the book going into a book subscription box I bought for the month of May.

I completely understand, Sara. Even I went off on an unplanned hiatus and it was difficult not to be able to do what I love for a few weeks. Hope life gets a little less hectic for the both of us in coming months. Have a great April! 🙂

      1. Mistborn is AWESOME. I should finish it tonight, but it’s been so absorbing and unputdownable that I’m hoping the last couple chapters will continue carrying that momentum to the end. 😀

Unfortunately I’ve had to take more unplanned time off from blogging… so I’m behind on anything you’ve posted recently. Have you finished reading Wonder Woman yet?

      2. Not yet, although it’s still high on my TBR. I had some ARCs and book club picks to get through, so I haven’t yet gotten to it. I hope to soon though!

Have you finished Mistborn? What did you think? I hope you loved it! 🙂

      3. I LOVED MISTBORN. 😀 Everything about it was… just… I mean… SLASJFLKAJKLFAJJFAJFA. XD I’m a bit sad that I borrowed the book from a friend, but I can’t forget that a) I can always ask for Mistborn for my movie, and b) my friend immediately let me borrow Books #2 and #3 of the series.

      4. I’m sure he would happy to hear that. XD And I’m already expecting the rest of the series to continue ripping out my heart and stomping on it. So you just confirmed that I’ve got the right mentality going forward! lol

  4. In terms if reading I think this year has been going quite well. It’s only this year that I’ve started keeping track of my reading habits, before that I was a mess.

    Thanks for including my post!
I’m really looking forward to Leah on the Offbeat too 😍😍😍

    1. That’s great! I wasn’t a very organised reader before I joined Goodreads and even then it was only last year that I used it to keep track of my reading properly. 😅

No problem. 😊 I had a feeling you’d say that about Leah on the Offbeat. 😅

  5. I don’t know how my reading has going since I never actually kept track.
I have been waiting for Ace of Shades for sooo long although I am pretty sure that I’m not going to read it because Mom and Dad said that no more buying books now (HOW CRUEL!!)
And I want to read at least one V. E Schwab book this year.

      1. I don’t think my friends would actually gift me anything also ’cause my birthday is still pretty far away. Not to mention that my friends live some 1500 km away.
I want to read A Darker Shade of Magic this year.

  6. How did you like the audiobook for And Then There Were None? I read the novel but never listened to it before. Thanks for featuring my post as well 🙂 you can always just say my name as Ayunda to make it short 😉

    1. The narration of And Then There Were None is the reason I gave it 5 stars. I think I’d rate the story itself is 4 stars. 🙂
No problem! Really enjoyed your post. 😊
Thanks for letting me know! I’m a bit wary of using people’s names as I’m not sure if I can shorten it in any way without offending that person. 😅
